What does your holding tank size call for?

A holding tank on an RV, a boat or a portable toilet stores waste until you can empty it, and the Rid-X dose is set by how many gallons it holds. Find that number in your RV or boat manual first. The liquid then gives you four measures, from 4 oz for a 20 gallon tank up to 10 oz for 50 gallons, each poured in with its own amount of fresh water. The pacs turn the job into counting: one pac for 20, 30 or 40 gallons, two for 50.

Choose the liquid if you would rather measure in ounces, or the pacs if counting is easier on the road. A 48 fl oz bottle is good for up to 8 treatments, a 24 fl oz bottle holds half the liquid, and a box holds 8 pacs. Whichever you carry, you still empty the tank at a dump station, a sewer hookup or through a pumping service, never onto the ground. Our RV and boat guide covers the rest of the trip, from valves to rinsing.

Questions

About Rid-X RV and holding tank treatment

How much Rid-X Holding Tank Deodorizer do you add?

It depends on the tank. For the liquid, the label gives 4 oz for 20 gallons, 6 oz for 30, 8 oz for 40 and 10 oz for 50. In pacs, one covers tanks of 20 to 40 gallons and two cover 50. Both go in with fresh water, half a gallon for the smallest tank up to 1.25 gallons for the largest.

Can you empty a tank treated with Rid-X into your home septic system?

Only if the system can take it. The University of Arizona's extension sheet warns that waste from a treated holding tank can kill off a septic tank's bacteria and lead to failure, and it points RV owners toward enzyme or bacterial products, the type Rid-X says its deodorizer is. Los Angeles County allows it only after a qualified contractor finds the system sound and able to carry the extra load.

Where do you dump an RV tank treated with Rid-X?

At an RV dump station, through a permitted sewer connection or by a licensed pumping service. Never on the ground and never into a storm drain. The University of Arizona and Los Angeles County public health both warn against it, and the county links that kind of dumping to polluted water, vermin and disease.
