Where a Rid-X dose ends up: inside your septic tank
Just pumped. A thin crust of scum on top and little sludge on the floor. Your tank has years of room.
Years later. Scum thickens on top and sludge builds on the bottom as solids collect in your tank.
Time to pump. The EPA says pump when sludge reaches within 12 inches of the outlet, or when sludge and scum fill a quarter of the liquid depth.
The numbers on the drawing
House drain and inlet. Every toilet, sink and washer in your house drains down one pipe into the tank.
Scum layer. Oil and grease float up into a crust. A baffle and the outlet tee hold it back.
Sludge layer. Solids sink to the floor and stay there. Only a pump truck takes them out.
Drainfield. Liquid runs out to buried pipes in gravel, and the soil treats it on its way to groundwater.
Whatever you put down the toilet each month, the EPA asks for a professional inspection at least every three years and says household tanks are typically pumped every three to five years.

Rid-X Platinum, pods vs powder, and a year in one order
Pods, powder or liquid?
Three Rid-X forms share one monthly routine. A pod is a counted 3.2 oz pouch, powder is a 9.8 oz measure from a larger pack, and Platinum is a marked pour from a bottle. See them side by side, with the maker's claims kept apart from the dose.
A year in one order
Rid-X sells twelve months of doses three ways: a box of 12 pods, a powder box of six double packs, and two 6-month Platinum bottles. Compare what sits inside each box, how one month comes out of it, and where a year's supply should be kept.
Rid-X Platinum
Platinum is the Rid-X liquid, sold as 3, 6 and 12-month supplies, and Professional Platinum is a single 24 oz bottle. You pour both once a month at the marked dose. See which supply fits your calendar and what the Professional label does and does not change.
Each of these pages belongs to the Rid-X lineup, priced as of our last catalog update.
Questions
What you ask about Rid-X
How often do you use Rid-X?
Once a month for the septic products. You put one dose into a toilet and flush: a whole pod, 9.8 oz of powder, or the amount marked on a Platinum bottle. The Platinum label says once a month only, and none of the directions we read ask for a second dose. Our monthly steps cover timing and storage.
Do you still need to pump your tank if you use Rid-X?
Yes. Small print on the maker's own photos sells Rid-X for use along with occasional pumping. The EPA's septic care page calls for a professional to inspect an average household system at least every three years, with a pump-out typically every three to five. Set those dates first with our pumping schedule, then fit the monthly dose around them.
Will the EPA tell you to use Rid-X or another septic additive?
No. The EPA's frequent questions page answers that question with a plain no, because a working household tank already holds the bacteria and enzymes it needs, and the agency rates no individual products. Its 2024 fact sheet grants that some biological additives can reduce scum and sludge, with an unknown long-term effect on the soil. Each source and its date sit side by side on our additives page.
What are you flushing when you use Rid-X, by the maker's account?
Rid-X says its pods, powder and liquids carry bacteria and enzymes, in a mix it calls dual action. That is the maker's description, not something we measured. For context, the EPA's 2024 fact sheet on additives notes that bacterial strains are often not named on the labels of such products and that enzymes are non-living proteins.
Which Rid-X product do you use in an RV or boat holding tank?
Rid-X Holding Tank Deodorizer. It comes as a liquid, in a 24 or a 48 fl oz bottle, or as a box of 8 pacs. You dose it by the size of the tank, with fresh water, each time the tank is treated. The label covers RV, marine and portable toilet tanks. Doses and dumping rules are laid out in RVs and boats, step by step.
Where can you buy Rid-X?
Every product page and shelf here has a button that opens the same product at our retail partner in a new tab, in the supply size or bottle you picked. Payment, delivery and returns all happen there, not on this site. The prices you see on our pages are figures from our last update.
