How to use Rid-X once a month

One pod, one measured dose of powder or one pour of liquid goes down a toilet once a month. Here is how the packs say to do it, and what that monthly dose cannot do for your tank.

Key points

  • One dose a month goes into a toilet and is flushed: a 3.2 oz pod, 9.8 oz of powder or the dose marked on a Platinum bottle.
  • The Septi-Pacs bag writes one pod a month for tanks of 700 to 1,500 gallons.
  • Flush when nobody will use the plumbing for some hours, and store pods and bottles out of reach of children and pets.
  • A monthly dose never moves the pump-out date. Plan an inspection at least every three years.

Rid-X comes in three forms for a house septic tank: dissolvable pods the maker calls Septi-Pacs, a powder, and Platinum liquid. You use all three the same way. You put one month's dose into a toilet, flush, and do it again a month later. Inside, the maker says, are bacteria and enzymes meant to digest what settles in the tank. Those are its words, and we pass them on as a description of what you are buying, not as a result we have measured.

Before the monthly habit starts, it helps to know where the public agencies stand. Asked whether septic additives are recommended, the EPA's frequent questions page gives a one-word answer: no. The maker's own photos print a small line that pairs the product with occasional pumping. So a pod on the first of the month never moves the date when your tank is due for an inspection and a pump-out. Keep both schedules, and keep them on the same calendar.

What you need

Step by step

  1. 1Pick the form you will keep using

    • Pods are measured for you: by the bag's directions, one 3.2 oz pod is one month's dose.
    • Powder comes in bigger packs. One monthly dose is 9.8 oz, and in the 12-month box each pack holds two doses, so you open a new pack every other month.
    • Platinum liquid comes in 3-month and 6-month bottles, and its label reads "Use only 1x/month".
    • Professional Platinum is a single 24 oz bottle. Follow the dose printed on it.

Tip: If different people in the house take turns with the dose, pods leave the least room for a mismeasured month.

  1. Pods

    12 monthly doses

    $3.33 per month

    $39.99 for 12 months

  1. 2Match the dose to your tank

    • The Septi-Pacs bag writes one pod a month for tanks between 700 and 1,500 gallons.
    • The product descriptions for the pods, powder and Platinum all name the same upper limit: monthly maintenance of tanks up to 1,500 gallons.
    • Not sure how big your tank is? Ask the company that pumps it, or look at the paperwork from its last visit.
    • Use one dose, not two. None of the directions we read ask for a double dose, and the Platinum label says once a month only.
  2. 3Flush when the plumbing will rest

    • The back of the Septi-Pacs bag advises flushing when nobody will use the plumbing for some hours, such as before going to bed or before leaving home for the day.
    • Drop the pod straight into the bowl, or pour the powder or the liquid in, and flush once.
    • The powder steps printed on the box are short: drop powder, flush with water, repeat once a month.
    • Wear gloves if you pour powder from an opened pack, and wash your hands afterward.

Tip: Bedtime on the first of the month is easy to remember and fits the bag's advice.

Where the dose goes: from the bowl, down the drain pipe and into the septic tank.
  1. 4Put the dose on a calendar

    • The directions are written for one dose a month, so set a repeating reminder on your phone or circle the day on a wall calendar.
    • Write the count on the box when you open it. A 12-month pod box holds 12, the 8-count powder box holds eight doses, and a 6-month Platinum bottle holds six.
    • When the supply runs low, look at the inspection date on the same calendar. If it falls within the next year, book it then.
  1. Liquid

  1. 5Store pods and bottles out of reach

    • A pod is a small pouch meant to go into water whole, and to a toddler or a dog it can look like something to chew.
    • The CPSC's warning is about laundry packets, not septic pods. Still, its advice for laundry packets is a sensible model: keep them sealed in the original package, locked up and out of sight and reach, and touch them only with dry hands.
    • Close the powder pack and the liquid bottle after every use and keep them on the same high shelf.
    • If someone swallows any of it, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222. America's Poison Centers runs that line around the clock, at no cost.

Tip: Save the Poison Help number in your phone now. America's Poison Centers advises having it on hand before anything happens.

  2. 6Keep the inspection and pumping dates

    • Plan on a professional inspection at least every three years and a pump-out roughly every three to five, the spans on the EPA's septic care page.
    • If the inspection says the tank is due, book the pump-out whether or not this month's dose went in.
    • For what the pumper measures and when to call sooner, see our pumping schedule.

Tip: Write the date of the last pump-out on the inside of the box lid, so both schedules sit where you will see them.

What the maker says the monthly dose does

On the maker's account, each dose carries natural bacteria and enzymes, and the pack copy calls the pairing dual action: enzymes go to work right away, bacteria stay on longer. Platinum is billed as the maker's most powerful formula. Rid-X puts a 2x waste reduction figure on it, measured against its own powder over 21 months, according to the small print on its photos.

We have not tested any of that, and none of the public sources we read tested Rid-X by name. For the agencies' view of biological additives, source by source, read Do septic treatments like Rid-X work?. In brief, the EPA does not recommend them. Its 2024 fact sheet grants that some can shrink the scum and sludge layers. What years of use do to the soil that cleans your wastewater, the same sheet calls unknown.

What a monthly dose does not replace

Solids settle in every tank, and over the years only a pump truck takes them out. Penn State Extension is blunt about it. Penn State's septic page warns against treating any additive as a stand-in for the pump truck, because leaning on one in place of pumping may lead to failure of the whole system.

Your daily habits reach the tank far more often than any pouch does. The EPA's care page asks you to flush only human waste and toilet paper, to spread laundry over the week, and to keep cars off the drainfield. The rest of that list is on our septic-safe habits page, and it costs nothing to follow.

If you live in Washington State

Washington lets people use and sell only those septic additives that its Department of Health has reviewed. You will find Rid-X Septi-Pacs, powder pacs and Platinum, along with other Rid-X septic products, on the department's December 2024 list. Being there tells you the state read the ingredients and found them unlikely to cause harm. It tells you nothing about whether the dose does anything in your tank.

RV and boat tanks need a different product

The pods, powder and Platinum liquid are sold for a house septic tank. An RV, a boat or a portable toilet has a holding tank instead. For that, Rid-X sells a separate Holding Tank Deodorizer with its own dose table by tank size and fresh water. If you camp or sail, read RV and boat holding tanks before you pour anything in, and see the whole septic treatment shelf for the house forms side by side.
